iPhone Duo

Fold and unfold the iPhone Duo without losing your research.

You are reading a filing on the cover screen. You unfold to see more of it. The app jumps back to the top, or the notes sheet you had open is gone. That is one of the less visible problems on the iPhone Duo, and it matters more for research than for most things you do on a phone. Here is why it happens, how to test your own apps, and what Cala Terminal does when you fold.

Why some apps lose your place when you unfold

The Duo has a 5.4-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch inner screen (Apple Newsroom). When you open or close it, iOS does not restart the app. It tells the app that its size changed (Apple Developer Forums, 9to5Mac).

That sounds safe, and often it is. The trouble starts when an app answers the size change by swapping to a completely different layout. Developers working on Duo builds report what can go wrong: an open sheet gets dropped, scroll position and selection reset, or the screen stays empty until you refresh (MacRumors developer notes, a GitHub issue).

None of this means an app is badly made. It means the fold is new, and some apps have not finished handling it yet. But if your routine is to read on the cover screen and unfold when you want more room, you should know how your apps behave before you rely on them in the middle of a session.

What losing your place costs in research

Losing your place in a game or a feed is a small annoyance. In research it costs more. You were halfway down a 10-K, you had a ticker selected in a watchlist, you were typing a note about guidance. Back at the top of the page, you have to find the paragraph again, and the note may be gone.

The fold also tends to happen at the exact moment you want to go deeper. You unfold because you want a chart and notes at the same time, or a longer view of a table. If that is the moment the app resets, the bigger screen works against you.

A two-minute unfold test for your apps

Run this once for each app you use to follow markets. It works the same for a charting app, a broker app or a notes app. If you chart in TradingView or a broker app, check its release notes for Duo support too.

Open something deep

Go to a ticker, open a filing or a news item, and scroll well down the page.

Leave something open

Open a sheet, a menu or a side panel. Select a row in a list.

Start typing

Begin a note or a search, and leave the text unsent.

Unfold, then fold back

Open the phone fully, wait a second, then close it again. Also try half open.

Check what survived

Same scroll position? Same selection? Is the sheet still open and the text still there? Or an empty screen?

What Cala Terminal does when you fold

Cala Terminal is an AI research terminal. On the Duo, the app detects the device natively and tells the page where the hinge and the corner cutouts are. That information updates on every posture change.

When you fold or unfold, the same Cala session keeps running. The app is not reloaded. It is resized, and your open desk stays as it was. What changes is how the desk is laid out for the new screen.

Unfold to the inner screen and turn it to landscape, and the Explorer and the Cala AI chat sit side by side. In inner portrait, on the cover screen and half open, opening one side panel closes the other, so nothing gets squeezed. Fold back to the cover screen and you get the phone layout with drawers, where on narrow widths one pane shows at a time. On a Duo the side panels start open and are not collapsed for you.

We will not promise that nothing can ever be lost. What we can say is how it is built: a fold is a resize of the session you already have open, not a fresh start.

If you want to try it, Cala is on the App Store for the iPhone Duo: get Cala Terminal. It is also on Mac, Windows, iPad and the web.

Limits and related reading

Cala runs as a single window and does not advertise Split View or multi-window support. Split View on the Duo is fixed at 50/50 for any two apps paired there (MacRumors). Cala is not a broker and does not give buy or sell advice.

FAQ

Does folding the iPhone Duo restart my app?

No. For the app, folding is a size change, not a restart (9to5Mac). Problems come from how each app handles that size change.

Why does my app go back to the top when I unfold?

Apps that swap layouts on fold can reset scroll and selection, drop an open sheet or show an empty screen (MacRumors developer notes). An update from the developer is the fix.

Will I lose my research in Cala if I unfold?

Folding or unfolding resizes the same running Cala session. The app is not reloaded and your open desk stays as it was.

Can I use Split View with Cala?

Cala runs as a single window and does not advertise Split View or multi-window support. Split View on the Duo is fixed at 50/50 for any two apps paired there.

Is Cala a broker?

No. Cala is an AI research terminal. It does not execute trades or tell you what to buy or sell.

Keep your research when you unfold

Cala resizes the same running session when you fold or unfold the iPhone Duo. AI research terminal, not a broker.
