The gap is not intelligence — it is data

You ask for “NVDA’s price” and a general model can answer with a round number. Sometimes it is right by coincidence. Sometimes it mixes sessions, splits, or a different ticker. It is not lying on purpose: it is completing text. A price is a market fact, not a plausible sentence.

The same thing happens with EPS, guidance, and 10-K figures. If the model does not have the filing in front of it, it improvises the shape of a financial answer. That is why a terminal that fetches and shows the fetch is a different architecture, not “more AI.”

FinanceBench tested GPT-4 on real financial questions. Without filing context, accuracy fell to around 9%. With the filing, it rose to around 79%. The jump is not a prompt trick: it is access to the document the number comes from.

Industry analysis — Daloopa and others — puts hallucinations on finance tasks near 41% when there is no verified data layer. That matches what you see day to day: the model writes well and invents the figure. A web-search assistant helps; it does not replace a tool that returns a quote, a print, or a timestamped filing.
